About Us

Y-Carbon is a nanotechnology start-up based in King of Prussia, PA. As a spin off from the Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, Y-Carbon has obtained exclusive rights to intellectual property invented and patented by Drexel University. Y-Carbon is pioneering a family of novel high-performance porous carbon materials to meet the needs of a variety of markets that are looking for new, advanced high quality materials. The ability to tailor the properties of porous carbon material is unique to Y-Carbon award winning technology and thus provides a quantum leap in performance in many applications such as supercapacitors, gas (hydrogen, methane and chlorine) storage, protein filtration, water purification, fuel cell catalysts, etc. These applications have enormous business opportunities in the fields of energy, water and medicine. Y-Carbon is a portfolio company of the Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center, and The Nanotechnology Institute of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of SouthEastern Pennsylvania.

History

Founded in 2004 and active since end of 2007, Y-Carbon's proprietary Tunable Nanoporous Carbon technology is built on a new nanoscale materials initially developed at the Drexel University. Team at Y-Carbon is made up of industrial leaders and preeminent scientists in the field of carbon. Y-Carbon is led by James Horan, and was founded by Dr. Yury Gogotsi, Chief Science Officer, Dr. Ranjan Dash, Chief Technology Officer and Dr. Gleb Yushin.

Y-Carbon office and manufacturing facility is located in the research center of Arkema in King of Prussia, PA.

The letter ‘Y’ in Y-Carbon signifies "why?” Why Carbon? Carbon is the one of the most versatile materials known to man, with diverse applications including gas storage, molecular sieves, catalyst supports, absorbents, electrodes in batteries and supercapacitors, water/air filters, and medical devices. It is regarded as one of the most important building blocks in nanotechnology. With the ability to vary the properties in carbon materials, it can cover a wide range of applications to satisfy our current and future needs. All materials are manufactured in USA.

• How big is your facility?
Y-Carbon occupies a leased fully-equipped wet laboratory space located in King of Prussia, PA. The leased space includes approximately 1600 square feet of space with almost 1200 square feet of wet laboratory space and 400 square feet of office space. The facility is leased by Arkema Inc. and is located at their Research Center in King of Prussia, PA. In addition to King of Prussia facility, Y-Carbon has a 700 square feet of wet laboratory space and 200 square feet of office space in Bridge Business Center, Bristol, PA.

• Does Y-Carbon have exclusive license to the core technology?
Yes, Y-Carbon has worldwide exclusive license for manufacturing its proprietary carbon materials.
